The following audio documentary piece is hopefully going to be part of an ongoing set of recordings I have with my friends and family members. This first one is with my grandmother. She’s a woman who raised me alongside my mother and aunt. She recently fell down a flight of stairs and broke her neck, and hip. She can walk again, but the bleeding on her brain caused her dementia to go from the early stages to the late stages overnight. The shame and secrecy so prevalent amongst my family members when it comes to the surgeries that went on with me when I was an infant, a toddler, and again when I was 11 really come through in the way we can hardly have a conversation about it in this audio piece.
